Asian Tsunami
On December 26, 2004, a 9.3 magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia. The resulting tsunami produced waves that reached up to 100 ft and swept across Southeast Asia. Over 300,000 people were killed in 11 countries.
A Thirst No More team was on the ground just a few days after the tsunami hit. Our efforts there lasted for 2 years and it was the first time Thirst No More deployed team members to the international field on a full-time basis. The TNM team worked in India, Thailand, and Bonde Aceh Indonesia.
In all, TNM provided 500,000 pounds of relief supplies along with 2 water treatment units. We assisted in the provision of mosquito nets, the construction of homes and also started 12 micro businesses that were given to families who lost their livelihoods. Over 100 volunteers joined TNM in a tsunami relief project that impacted an estimated 25,000 people.
